UnLtd India supports early-stage social entrepreneurs and changemakers who are creating radically innovative solutions to address India’s social problems.
The Trafigura Foundation is partnering with the launch pad UnLtd India to support a selected portfolio of 9 social entrepreneurs whose brilliant ideas have a radically positive impact on the lives of many in India. Beside the offer of a grant , the entrepreneurs benefit from a coaching and mentoring support by our colleagues in the Trafigura’s Mumbai office, which are spending time and making their business know how available to help these young change-makers to start their socially valuable activities.
The projects supported by the Foundation span over different sujects, from the economic empowerment of rural areas, waste recycling and management, to women integration’s programme and medical businesses.
Snapshots of some of the projects we support:
- Sustainable Agro International (SAI)
SAI is working with small and marginal farmers in Odhisa and Chattisgarh helping them set up an agro forestry model on their barren land. To date, SAI has worked with 165 farmer familities, planted 217,000 trees that can be used as raw material for paper mills and has inked a contract for purchase by JP Paper Mills. SAI also provides the farmers with techniques for inter cropping as a food security measure in the interim.
Asya’s vision is to provide sustainable livelihoods to craftswomen in Uttar Pradesh (UP), North India while preserving the quality and intricacy of chikankari (a craft involving thread work that comes from that region). Over the last 4 years, Asya has trained around 200 women through its partner NGO and currently provides regular work to around 30 women, who can earn up to INR 6000 a month.
Paaduks addresses the issue of waste management by upcycling used tyres as soles of footwear. They also aim to provide regular income to the cobbler community in Bombay. Last year, Paaduks sold 2000 pairs of footwear and upcycled 700 Kgs of rubber.
- Urja Trust
Urja Trust works with homeless and runaway young and vulnerable women to help them reintegrate into the society. There are very few institutions and shelter homes that offer proper infrastructure, protection and rehabilitation services to girls from marginalised community who run away due to domestic abuse and exploitation. Urja runs a Night Shelter and a Day Care program that provides education, health and vocational opportunities to these young women. To date, Urja Trust has worked with 250 women and provided them with comprehensive rehabilitation.
“Our partnership with Trafigura Foundation has been critical in helping us support some remarkable leaders developing high impact solutions for under-served communities in India. In addition to the grant, what we have found most valuable is the frequent time, strategic inputs and the support given by the Trafigura team”. Pooja Warier, Co-founder and CEO of UnLtd India.
