Since 2008 we have been supporting the distribution of surgical kits in Gambia, Senegal, Guinea and Mali by Voir le Vie implementing partners. We are now embarking on a new partnership with HelpMeSee.
To combat the growing backlog of cataract cases around the world, HelpMeSee aims to train 1,000 surgeons and successfully deliver 4.9 to 5 million surgeries in Africa and Myanmar. Approximately 32 million people are bilaterally blind due to cataracts and an estimated 167 million people suffer from cataract visual impairment globally. Six million of these people live in Western and Sub-Saharan African countries.
Local surgeons restore sight using MSICS (manual small incision cataract surgeries) through the use of an innovative, pre-sterilized, single-use MSICS kit. The results of the surgery are immediate and the invaluable impact of this project can already be seen. Through this partnership, 10,000 adults and children will receive surgery by the end of 2015.
By the end of June 2014, we had already aided the distribution of 14,300 MSICS kits, through our previous partnership with French NGO Voir la Vie.
